The first fruits for this seaon's trials are ripe! Time to think about filing reports, so future growers can know what tastes and grows good! Gang members who need report forms will find them at the ITG Potting Shed.

Jill Taylor-Bussiere

Jill gardens in Kewaunee, Wisconsin. It's farm country, not far from Green Bay. Kewaunee  also is located in  USDA zone 5--winters are not for wimps! But the summers are glorious, if short. And while Wisconsin is more famous for its cheese, its butter and the legend of Vince Lombardi, it's also good tomato growing country as Jill's tomatoes illustrate. An advocate of open-pollinated tomatoes and organic gardening and farming, Jill lives on a 40 acre farm where she has a market garden, chickens, turkeys, and dairy goats

Dreaming of tomatoes?

Whether you ate them, cooked them, served them, or drank the juice, tomatoes in your dream are a happy omen of coming success and contentment.

Success in gardening has many roots. If you had to choose, which is most important for you to pay attention to and be guided by?

Observations you make over time based on what you see around you in your garden and your immediate area

Recommendations and guides issued by universities and Extension offices; nurseries and garden centers; gardening experts on TV, radio, and newspapers; gardening books

Jill's answer:

I think the more experienced and knowledgeable a gardener is, the more observations count. I'm certainly not anywhere near a point where I could do without references to look up and others' expertise. Yet, my observations tell me what does well in my garden, what amendments help, etc. etc. etc.

It is difficult indeed to think unpleasant thoughts while eating a homegrown tomato.

We Agree!!

The tomatoes in the photo are all heirlooms except for the 'Sungold' cherry tomatoes. You can see the 'Green Grape', developed by Tom Wagner, in the photo. I have a small market garden, of which tomatoes were my biggest money-maker this year. I tell many of my customers about the tomatoes - the name of the variety, any history I know, and encourage them to save the seeds and grow their own. Some people bought tomatoes primarily for the seeds this year, which makes me feel wonderful.   -- Jill Taylor-Bussiere
